We have a dream – one day we will retire from the rat race and sail around the world on a sailboat. We aren't ready for that yet, but these are the adventures of our first boat, the 26-foot sloop
Picaroon, on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. We started this blog with two aims: to keep friends and family up to date on our progress; and as a resource for people who have a mind to do the same thing.
HBHB is an over-achieving save-the-worlder; a liberal intellectual from the cultural wastelands of far-western Maryland, who has spent her illustrious professional life fighting a noble, but ultimately futile, battle against bad U.S. foreign policy.
HB has been sailing since she was a teenager, when she crewed her father’s 32-foot sloop,
Incognito. Bill and HB’s step-monster, Stef, recently returned to shore-life after their long Mexican adventure aboard the 42-foot ketch,
Summerwind, which remains our principal inspiration.
PipPip came to these shores to establish a 1300 square-foot colony of Merrie Englande in the heart of the American capital. Since that was easily achieved with relatively little bloodshed and a small mortgage, he has been working hard to counterbalance HB’s drive and dynamism with his own distinctive style of dilettante idleness, as befits an English gentleman in a barbarian country.
Pip has sailed since he was a wee laddie in the Lake District of northern England. He honed his skills as one-man skipper and crew aboard the 14-foot
Puffin, on the frigid waters of Windermere.
Pip and HB live in Washington, DC, and sail out of Edgewater, MD.
