Better drowned than duffers. If not duffers won't drown.

The weather is of intense interest to all mariners. Despite the priority the national and local media give to weather reporting over such dull topics as science, international affairs, or anything that happened South of the Tropic of Cancer,  it's actually quite difficult to get hold of decent meteorological data if you don't know where to look.

Your typical weather channel or website will give you the basics--temperature, sky cover, humidity, wind, heat index, wind chill. This is because when most people look at the weather, they want to know how comfortable they will be.

Mariners have a slightly more pressing need for good weather forecasting--their lives depend on it. Now, in the Chesapeake Bay, it's rare that the weather gets particularly exciting, but nonetheless we need to know if there's a Nor-easter blowing through, or if visibility is low.

This page is mostly here as an aggregator of various sources of data. We may add some articles about weather forecasting.

Take a look at the surface analysis map of North America. If this makes no sense at all to you, look up the meaning of the different symbols here.
